It began with the rebuilding and restoration of a 1931 Willys-Knight Touring car, and now is expanding to include other equally interesting collector cars. It’s the Gilmore Garage Works, an after-school enrichment program that takes place at the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners, Michigan.

According to the museum: “Adult mentors provide instruction in automotive technology, including welding, painting and fabrication skills. The goal: building career paths and a love for automotive history. As well as the ‘soft skills’ of personal responsibility, consistent attendance, and the importance of personal presentation. They’ll leave the program with a resume, a portfolio, and personal letters of recommendation – as well as self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment.”

Michael Spezia, Executive Director of the museum, said: “Our intent is not to turn out welders, painters or restoration professionals, but to introduce students to a unique environment and give them exposure to hands-on experience that we hope will motivate them to pursue further education, training, and a career.”

For more information on becoming a mentor or supporter of the program, visit GilmoreCarMuseum.org or call 269-671-5089, ext. 17.
